Iconic Design Chairs from Dutch Originals Get a New Future at Bert Plantagie
Dutch Originals, a furniture company offering iconic products by designers such as W.H. Gispen, W. Rietveld, C.H. Hoffmann, R. Eckhart, and the Gebroeders de Wit, was acquired by Bert Plantagie B.V. on January 1, 2025.
Since its inception, “Dutch design” has been a cornerstone of Bert Plantagie’s design philosophy, making Dutch Originals a perfect fit with the identity of Bert Plantagie B.V. The acquisition was realized in collaboration with Gispen, which repurchased the rights to the Gispen Classics from Dutch Originals. Bert Plantagie will take over production and become the exclusive retail partner for all Dutch Originals models (including the Gispen Classics) in the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, and the United Kingdom. The products from the Dutch Originals-collection will also be offered to Bert Plantagie’s project clients.
Heritage
In addition to the timeless models by W.H. Gispen, Dutch Originals has also produced iconic products such as Greetings from Holland by R. Eckhart and the tubular chair collection by the Gebroeders de Wit. Under the creative direction of Art Director Richard Hutten, Dutch Originals has also collaborated with Maarten Baas and Job van den Berg to design a collection of future design classics.
“We are very proud to add Dutch Originals to our furniture group and thus become an integral part of the legacy of some of the Netherlands’ most renowned designers. We understand the significance of this and aim to create a similar heritage for Dutch designs of today and the future,” says Maikel Ruijs, CEO of Bert Plantagie.
Future
Dutch Originals will continue to operate as an independent brand but will now be part of the Bert Plantagie organization. This strategic partnership strengthens opportunities for product development and international growth while allowing Dutch Originals to maintain its own identity and creativity.
As part of Bert Plantagie, Dutch Originals gains access to a broader network and more resources, laying the foundation for further innovation and strengthened brand positioning. However, the acquisition will not change Dutch Originals’ operations: all employees will retain their roles under the new ownership, ensuring continuity and expertise. A brand-new showroom with office space is planned for this spring, which will eventually house more Bert Plantagie brands.
“We truly see the addition of Dutch Originals’ employees and products as an enrichment,” says Jeroen Verweij, COO at Bert Plantagie. “Their craftsmanship and design values align perfectly with Bert Plantagie’s furniture production approach. Bert Plantagie and Dutch Originals complement each other seamlessly in this regard.”
